PUBLIC EDUCATION: The middle class built this country. People were lifted out of poverty through public education and labor reforms.
Today, public education is under attack. It is my top issue. Our country cannot excel if we leave the poor behind. I will work to change the way schools are funded so that the most vulnerable communities are not left behind.
THE RIGHT TO FAIR PAY:I am very proud to be endorsed by the AFL-CIO. Unions have been vilified in the past years because they were so effective in obtaining fair wages and safer work places. Corporate profits and executive compensation has skyrocketed while workers struggle along at less than $8 per hour. Trickle down isn't working for the average American. It is time to stand up. North Carolina has a great history of workers unionizing for the benefit of all.
HEALTH CARE: Republicans are seeking to end Medicare and Medicaid. These are lifelines for the poor, the catastrophically ill, and the elderly. They are also taking healthcare rights away from women. They have passed laws that prevent medical intervention that could save the life of a pregnant woman or girl. Abortion is a health care and should only be between a woman and her doctor.
In 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed the Law that ended the separate Corps for women.
Women were fully integrated into the US Army. This opened up many military occupations available to women.
In 1980, Kathy earned the top spot in her Company at ROTC Advanced Camp at Fort Bragg, NC
In 1983, Kathy was deployed to Granada for Operation Urgent Fury, Her success helped pave the way for women to be fully integrated into Army Aviation.
In 1988, Kathy took command of D Company,, 4/501st Attack Helicopter Battalion. As the Maintenance company commander, Kathy became the first woman to command a company in an Attack Helicopter Battalion.
Kathy left the Army in 1992 and was hired by a commercial helicopter service.
Kathy was the first woman to fly long line missions for several government agencies in wild fire support. (Kathy is in the brown flight jacket in the front row)
Kathy attributes her ability to enjoy an exciting career to the women in her life and to the women who fought for the right to live the life they chose.
Kathy did not set out to break barriers. When she realized her position, she took the responsibility very seriously. and was determined to make the path easier for the women who would follow.
